The first volume from the David May collection features a variety of subjects.
The coloured novelty cards date from c1919 and were chiefly printed in Germany - presumably they were standard subjects with village names overprinted.
Village Sports Days and other local and national events were photographed and recorded as postcards which were then available to all and formed a ready source of local news as well as souvenirs of great events.
The first half of the twentieth century was a prolific period for postcard printing in an age before the telephone came into common use. Communication by postcard, combined with an excellent postal service, was the preferred method of keeping in touch with family and friends. The collection reflects this use.
